Camera Critters: Flamingo

Here's my Camera Critters entry this weekend, Pink Flamingo. Photos were taken when we went to visit the Sacramento Zoo a few months ago. For more entries or would like to join us, just click the button above. Have a wonderful weekend!
The American Flamingo is the official name of the pink flamingos.
Their pink or reddish color comes from the algae, diatoms, and small crustaceans the birds eat. They also eat aquatic insects. Flamingos eat with their head upside down in the water, so they can suck water and food in with the front of their bill. Mud and water drain out the back of the bill. The food is caught by finger-like projections called lamellae in the beak. Flamingos hold their breath when feeding.

Flamingos run to gather speed when taking off. They flap their wings almost continuously in flight. They fly when startled or to migrate. The speed of a flock can reach 31 to 37 miles per hour. They can fly 300 miles to reach a new habitat.

I loved the flamingos I seen at the Dallas World Aquarium, too. They are so colorful, and they also run together in bunches. You definitely know it when you see them!

Great info about flamingos!

These are beautiful creatures! We have pink flamingos here but yours are more reddish. Thanks for sharing.
Hope your weekend went fine. Ours was a very long one because of the Songkran Festival. At ang saya-saya, hehehe! Your'e right, can't do it in Pinas kc El Nino. Besides, nong may San Juan pa tayo nilalagyan ba naman ng ihi, buhangin or dumi ang sinasaboy na tubig o di kaya tubig dagat kaya nawala na eventually ang masayang celebration na yon. IT was banned by ordinances. Kung di ba naman loko ang ibang mga Pinoy, LOL.

So sis, magiging pinkish din ang kutis natin kapag kumain tayo ng algae? LOL!

Nice capture!

They are so lovely and graceful, truly a magnificent creature of God. They exude grace and beauty and elegance too in their manners. Flamingos are one of the most beautiful birds in the US. Thanks for featuring them. God bless you all always.
